The Fleadh
We are a country in the depths of recession. We live from day to day assailed by a barrage of bad news while deeper and ever deeper cuts scar our lives our thinking and our dreams.
But for three years now our county town has been transformed by an army of volunteers and quietly and methodically they have lifted this curtain of gloom to reveal in this town in the hollow an amphitheatre of excellence of exuberance and hope. For ten precious days the drumlin hills echoed with music laughter and applause.
The people of Cavan opened their hearts and their homes to visitors from every corner of Ireland and for those who joined us from distant lands a very special welcome awaited. This was Cavan at its best. This was our Olympics.
A celebration of music song dance and story, a gathering like the gatherings of our ancestors at wake or fair or wedding. A celebration of all that is beautiful and priceless in our culture. A heritage kept alive through long winter nights in draughty halls of practice of tuition of frustration and of dedication A treasure handed down with pride and love to the next generation. For three years now the people of Cavan have feasted at this banquet of excellence served up to us by the young and the not so young.
They have lulled us and roused us they have soothed us and set our feet tapping with fiddle and flute and with banjo and bodhrán. With accordion and harp they have transported us to times and places and to the company and friendships of our youth. Singly and in groups they have filled the air around us with high notes, low notes and grace notes all blended together in perfect harmony.
They were there in every corner of every bar of every alley of every doorway. Alone or with others they sat and shared with us their talent. So intent on their music, were they that they were almost oblivious to passers by or casual onlookers or even to those who watched every finger movement every foot tap and listened to every note
And then there were the dancers whose mesmerizing intricate footwork brought cheers and applause from the audience and gasped of awe as they tapped and kicked and leaped into the misty night sky. Our feet tapped too but slower now but we remembered other time and other people.
Yes, it rained, soft Cavan rain, the rain that feeds and fills our lakes and rivers. Did we mind? Not really. We are used to it now. It is part of what we are. And that rain and the grey skies reflected our sadness as the party ended and we said goodbye to friends old and new. We will meet again to compete to entertain to laugh and to celebrate in Derry next year but inthe words of someone famous who is not from Cavan

THE FLEADH
Listen,
to the sweet sounds of the music drowning out the chatter of the crowds.
Look,
at the parade as it goes by, the colour in the costumes, the paintings on the walls.
Sit,
to rest your feet, take a bit to eat, quench your thirst.
Read,
the inscriptions on the art pieces, the catalogue to make sure you have not missed anything.
Sway
with the rhythm, tap your fingers with the beat of the bodhran, swing your partner round at the Cheile.
Linger,
a little longer to take in the sights, stare at the carry-on in the park.
Chat,
with the young contestants who travelled from all over the country, spend time with the old man from out the county.
Reflect,
when you get home on all you have seen and heard at the Cavan Fleadh, and cherish the memories made for tomorrow and beyond.
